This school had a grey courtyard that wasn’t giving much back to the pupils. It was hard, flat and didn’t offer much beyond a place to pass through. With artificial grass and a thoughtful design, it has been completely reimagined into a colourful play space that now grabs attention the moment you step in. At the centre is a green artificial grass area, surrounded by flowing zones in blue and yellow. The mix of colours gives the yard movement and makes it feel lively rather than static. The design flows around the space, tying the courtyard together and creating clear areas for children to use.
Built into the surface are a variety of playful designs and games. There’s hopscotch, number circles to follow around the yard, and a selection of shapes - stars, squares, circles and triangles. These are cut directly into the grass in bright, contrasting colours, adding layers of detail that invite children to explore and play. The effect is striking. What was once a grey, dull courtyard is now a vibrant, eye-catching play area.
