When we first visited Holywell Educate Together, the outdoor space set aside for the ASD class wasn’t living up to its potential. The ground was patchy, damp after rain, and a bit uneven. Teachers told us it was tricky to use it for more than short breaks because it simply wasn’t reliable. If the weather turned, the area was off-limits.

The school wanted something better - a year-round surface that would be safe underfoot but also offer children a mix of play and sensory experiences. That’s where artificial grass makes a big difference. Once it’s down, the surface stays level, drains quickly and doesn’t wear away in the same way natural grass does. It’s clean, consistent, and easy to keep.

Our team prepared the base carefully so there would be no dips or puddles. We then fitted a high-quality synthetic grass designed for schools, with enough softness for falls and plenty of durability for constant daily use. To bring the space to life, different colours and shapes were added. These help mark out areas for activity and create a more engaging environment without overwhelming children who prefer quieter play. The result is an outdoor zone that works for everyone. Pupils can run, sit, or explore at their own pace.

Teachers now have the option to bring lessons outside, confident that the surface will hold up whatever the weather. There’s no mowing, no mud, and no stress when it comes to upkeep. For Holywell Educate Together, it’s a practical upgrade that also supports inclusion. For us at Schools Grass, it’s another example of how the right design and materials can change how a school uses its space day to day.
