There’s something satisfying about being asked back to a school you’ve worked with before. It’s not flashy. It doesn’t need a sales pitch. It’s simply a sign that the work stood up over time.
In this case, Holywell School in Swords, Co. Dublin, who we had previously completed work for got back in touch following the installation of new modular classrooms on site. While the classrooms themselves were a welcome upgrade, their arrival left behind three separate outdoor areas that needed attention. These spaces were intended for student use, but in their existing state, they weren’t really fit for purpose.
Each area was surfaced in tarmac. Functional, yes. Inviting? Not quite. The school wanted something better. Somewhere safer, softer underfoot, and far more appealing for day-to-day activities.
That’s where we came back in.
The brief was straightforward: convert three external tarmac areas into usable play spaces using artificial grass. No over-engineering. No unnecessary extras. Just a durable, clean surface that would work for students and staff alike.
While the areas were distinct, they all shared the same starting point - hard, flat tarmac that offered little in terms of comfort or visual warmth. The goal was to soften those spaces, both physically and visually, and make them places students could actually enjoy spending time in.
As with many school projects, the work had to be carefully planned and efficiently delivered. These are active environments, and disruption needs to be kept to a minimum wherever possible.
This was a sizeable job, carried out across multiple areas, and the conditions didn’t always make things easy. The team worked through mixed weather, adapting as needed to keep progress moving while maintaining standards.
School projects don’t pause for perfect forecasts. They require flexibility, good sequencing, and a crew that knows how to work efficiently without cutting corners.
This install was no different. Despite the challenges, the transformation was clear as the work progressed.
The finished result is a stark contrast to what was there before. Where tarmac once dominated, the areas are now finished with artificial grass that immediately lifts the look and feel of the space.
More importantly, the new surfaces are far safer and more suitable for students. The grass provides a softer underfoot experience and creates a more welcoming environment for play, movement, and outdoor time throughout the school day.
Aesthetically, the change is just as significant. The outdoor areas now complement the new modular classrooms rather than feeling like an afterthought.
Being invited back to carry out additional work is always meaningful. It’s a quiet endorsement of previous projects, the standard of installation, and how the team operates on site.
For schools, trust matters. Budgets are tight. Timelines matter. And once a contractor proves themselves, it makes sense to return to a known quantity.
This project is a good example of that relationship in action.
If your school is adding new buildings, reconfiguring outdoor space, or simply looking to make existing areas more usable, artificial grass can be a practical and long-lasting solution.
